Discover scenic mountain biking trails across Vancouver Island

12/05/2025

From forest trails to ocean views, and with rideable routes year-round, Vancouver Island has earned its place as one of BC’s top mountain biking destinations. The island’s varied terrain makes it easy to find a trail that fits, whether you’re looking for an easy loop close to town or a full-day adventure through the trees.
Each region has its own riding experience, along with easy access to restaurants, shops, and places to stay. And with Coast Hotels located near every major biking area, it's easy to plan a trip that blends big outdoor days with a comfortable place to wind down.

Cumberland: Forest Trails and Small Town Charm

Cumberland is home to one of Vancouver Island’s largest and most established mountain biking trail networks, with over 200 kilometres of rideable routes that start straight in town. The mix of steady climbs, beginner trails and technical descents makes it a great spot for all levels of riders. Plus, nearby zones like Mount Washington Alpine Resort and Forbidden Plateau add even more ground to explore.

Coast Courtenay Hotel and Pool

Just 15 minutes away, the Coast Courtenay Hotel is the perfect place to unwind after a day on the trails, offering comfortable rooms and easy access to nearby paths. It's also close to downtown Courtenay, where you can grab a bite, browse local shops or simply take it easy off the bike. The village has a laid-back, post-ride vibe with cafes, craft breweries and bike-friendly spots offering rentals, repairs and gear, all within walking distance.

Campbell River: Rugged Routes in a Northern Setting

Campbell River sits farther north than the island’s other major mountain biking hubs, and the trails reflect that wilder feel. Snowden Forest is the main network here, with over 100 kilometres of technical singletrack. Riders can expect rooty climbs, rocky descents and a remote forest experience. Closer to town, Beaver Lodge Lands features casual loops that are great for a warm-up ride or a slower-paced day.

Right in the heart of it all is the Coast Discovery Inn, just steps from the marina and a short ride from trails. It’s an easy home base for biking days and evenings by the water, with restaurants, cafés and local spots to unwind just outside your door.

Parksville: Scenic Salish Sea Views

Just outside Parksville, near Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, HammerFest includes over 90 kilometres of riding through tight trees before you reach clearings that open up to views of the Salish Sea. If you’re after something more relaxed, check out the Parksville Wetland Trail to get a little bird watching in as you ride.

Coast Parksville Hotel Outdoor Courtyard

The Coast Parksville Hotel is just a 20-minute drive from HammerFest's trailhead and walking distance to Paradise Mini Golf and Fun Park for a post-ride change of pace. It’s a stay that fits the pace of Parksville, with a quieter feel than some of the island’s busier hubs.

Nanaimo: Steep Climbs and Island Add-Ons

South of Nanaimo, you have your pick of trail networks. Mount Benson adds steeper trails and a more rugged experience for those looking to push a bit harder, while Doumont offers a variety of skill levels. Looking for a more casual pace? Westwood Lake Park has a double-wide trail so you can talk while you ride.

The Coast Bastion Hotel is located downtown on the waterfront and only a short drive from all three trail networks. It’s also across from the Gabriola Island ferry terminal, which makes it easy to mix in a day trip or explore a little farther between rides.

Victoria & Langford: City Access with Year-Round Riding

Victoria’s mild climate and well-maintained trail networks make this one of the few spots in BC where you can ride year-round. Bear Mountain is home to Canada’s national mountain bike training center and offers cross-country trails that climb through forest and rock. Hartland is a go-to for locals with a mix of technical and fast-moving trails, while Jordie Lunn Bike Park brings progressive features and skills areas all in one place.

After riding, the Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina by APA gives you front-row access to the best of the city. Set right on the harbour, you can take a water taxi to visit downtown or walk over for ice cream at Fisherman’s Wharf or wander over to Market Square, one of downtown’s main gathering spots with restaurants, cafés and shops.

Cowichan Valley: Biking Trails Worth The Drive

The Cowichan Valley serves up a mix of quiet forest trails, switchback climbs, and some of the best views on the island. Mount Tzouhalem is known for its lookout points, while Maple Mountain and Mount Prevost bring more advanced terrain for riders who like a challenge. The trails are well-built and loved by locals, with fewer crowds than the island’s busier biking hubs.

There isn’t a Coast Hotel in Cowichan, but the Coast Bastion Hotel and Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina by APA are within a 90-minute drive. Stay at either to combine a day of riding with a relaxing night on the coast.

Coast Bastion Hotel Premium King Bed Room

Whether you’re riding Cumberland’s forest trails, tackling the terrain in Campbell River, or taking in views from Mount Tzouhalem, Coast Hotels puts you close to Vancouver Island’s top mountain biking destinations. With comfortable rooms, flexible cancellation and convenient locations near each region, it’s easy to plan a trip that fits your ride style. “This hotel is amazing! We chose it because it is pet-friendly, but the staff was also super friendly. The accommodations were clean with an awesome television after a long day of skiing, and a wonderful shower as well. We were so impressed with EVERYTHING!” - Belinda Titanic
