Coast Bastion Hotel
Our one night stay was extremely comfortable, quiet and relaxing after a long flight. We had an excellent dinner in the dining room with wonderful west coast seafood. all the staff went out of their way to be helpful and after our experience at this hotel I would not stay anywhere else in Nanaimo.
Clean and professional, not cheap
I stayed one night at the Coast Bastion with my teenage son on our way from the mainland to his soccer game in Duncan the next day. If I’d had the option of rating this 3.5 out of 5, I would have chosen that, but ultimately couldn’t justify a 4 out of 5 rating. I only rate about 2 percent of my accommodation as 5 out of 5, so the vast majority of the remainder are typically split fairly evenly between 3 and 4.
We had a “Superior Room, 2 double beds”. It had a partial view of the harbour. If it had been a full view, that might have been enough to get me to the higher rating. We paid $184 for the night, which included parking. Ultimately, it was the price that held my rating to 3 out of 5. I’ve seen this hotel described as the best in Nanaimo. That may well be the case. But at that price, the hotel and room should be something special. For the price, I’d say it was closer to average than to special.
The location is excellent. We were able to walk down to the seaplane terminal to pick up my wife and my son’s friend the next morning. That was the main reason we picked a hotel right in town. The hotel location is generally very central. If I was coming over from the mainland on the ferry again and just passing through, I might stay here again, but I would be just as likely to choose to stay in a cheaper motel-type accommodation.
I have to say, it was an absolute pleasure to deal with Sarah at the front desk, both on check-in and on check-out the next day (does she work 24 hours, I joked!).
Location at the centre of Old Town downtown and waterfront – unbeatable. You could very nearly walk to most things, including excellent nearby restaurants; but plenty of parking very close, too (for excursions). And the in-house restaurant is fabulous — Minnoz Restaurant & Lounge is an attraction in its own right. A generally very good to excellent hotel; I won’t look for anything better. The staff have won a regular traveler’s business.
I was overly impressed by the Coast Bastion Hotel
I wasn’t expecting half of the quality I received staying at the Coast Bastion Hotel. It was a brand newly renovated room and everything was just amazing. I highly recommend staying here. Great location. Great staff.

The BEST hotel in Naniamo
From the moment you enter this beautiful property – you are greeted by warm friendly people that are genuine in their desire to exceed your expectations. We stay at the Bastion every time we are in Nanaimo and I have honestly never been disappointed. We asked for a room close to the elevator because my child is on crutches, and they were more than happy to accommodate. In fact, every time we entered the lobby, someone at the front (bellman or front desk) would ask how everything was and whether we needed anything. He even offered the use of a wheelchair if it made things easier. The rooms are very clean, and nicely appointed. Parking was very convenient and reasonably priced, unlike other downtown properties. Everything about this property is first rate!
