From the outside looking in, Saskatchewan is often considered a “boring” flat land, but don’t let the perception fool you. With a yearly average of 2,374 hours of sunshine, Swift Current’s climate ranks as one of the best overall in the country. Out of 100 cities surveyed by Meteorological Services of Canada, Swift Current also has the 5th clearest skies, so there are plenty of opportunities to savour those endless vistas. History of Swift Current, Saskatchewan

The history of Swift Current is traced back through time with Swift Current Creek, flowing powerfully across 100 miles of prairie to the South Saskatchewan River. First Nations peoples knew this creek quite well and camped here for centuries. The first known name is believed to have come from the Cree, who referred to it as “kisiskâciwan” which means “it flows swiftly.”

With the fur trade and railroad established, the city settlement and businesses began to grow, attracting more settlers to make the west their new home. Now, Swift Current is known for its abundance of cultural events and its hockey roots. Swift Current may be a small, friendly town with a population of 18,500, but the area is home to various festivals, art shows, museums, and sports venues. Swift Current is located along the Trans-Canada Highway and can be reached within a day’s travel of all major centres in Western Canada. It’s two-and-a-half hours from Regina, three hours from Saskatoon and five hours from Calgary.

The Local Gems

Swift Current caters to sports fans with its wide-ranging facilities that will have you cheering out loud. Ice-hockey die-hard fans, you can head to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex to see the Western Hockey League's (WHL) Swift Current Broncos and many of the local hockey teams play. If you like curling or roller derby, the Swift Current Curling Club and South West Roller Derby Association are both on deck to entertain as well.

The iPlex also features the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame where you can see Saskatchewan-based NHL legends like Gordie Howe and Bryan Trottier honoured for their legendary contributions to the sport.

Baseball aficionados can catch a Western Major Baseball League game and watch the Swift Current 57’s play as you enjoy peanuts and Cracker Jacks. Golfers can head to the Elmwood or Chinook Golf Course for a few rounds to perfect some swings. To continue the outdoor fun, try hiking the Chinook Parkway. It features 60 wildflowers and a picturesque trail near the Swift Current Creek perfect for jogging, bird-watching, and more. Or, you can go further south and visit the badlands at Grassland National Park. Here, you can hike, ride a traditional wagon, find dinosaur fossils, or look for animals like bison and prairie dogs.

If you’re looking to learn and appreciate Swift Current’s past and culture, we have a couple suggestions that bring history and activities together for one and all. Visit Doc’s Town Heritage Village located in Kinetic Exhibition Park to see a replica of a prairie village and what life was like back then. Next, travel through time and explore the rich history of the Mennonite Heritage Village. This 40 acre site features an original homestead, church, garden, and authentic antiques and artifacts.
