The Bastion

The Bastion is one of Nanaimo’s most recognized historic landmarks, located near the city’s downtown waterfront. Built by the Hudson’s Bay Company between 1853 and 1855, the wooden tower was created during Nanaimo’s early coal mining period and remains an important part of the city’s heritage. The City of Nanaimo identifies it as the community’s oldest building and the only known remaining freestanding tower structure built by the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Today, The Bastion gives visitors a simple way to connect with Nanaimo’s past while exploring the harbourfront and downtown area. Its distinctive three-storey structure stands as a reminder of the city’s early European settlement, trade activity and connection to Vancouver Island’s coal industry. Seasonal visits and group tours may be available through the Nanaimo Museum, so guests should check current hours before planning a visit.
