Learn how your Coast Hotel stay can help rebuild forests and oceans

05/06/2025

Forests and oceans are the lifelines of our planet. They purify the air, regulate the climate and create the kinds of landscapes that people travel the world to experience. But many of these ecosystems are under growing pressure. In 2024 alone, more than 5.4 million hectares of forest were lost to wildfires in Canada. Another 3.6 million hectares in the USA. Under the surface, kelp forests play a critical role in marine biodiversity and can capture carbon up to 30 times faster than trees. But in the past fifty years, nearly half have disappeared.

This World Environment Day, we’re excited to share our new partnership with TELUS Environmental Solutions. Together, we’re supporting major reforestation and kelp restoration projects across Canada, helping to restore damaged ecosystems.

It’s a simple but powerful idea: what if choosing where you stay could help restore the planet? Now, with Coast Hotels, it can. Coast Rewards Members can redeem points to support reforestation efforts, turning your next trip into something even more meaningful.

a shared effort to support restoration projects

Through our partnership, Coast Hotels is supporting large-scale restoration projects across Canada, from post-wildfire forests to kelp ecosystems in coastal waters. These efforts are focused, place-based and collaborative. TELUS Environmental Solutions works directly with Indigenous communities, environmental scientists and local partners to guide every stage of the work. Whether it’s selecting native tree species for replanting or identifying key marine zones for kelp restoration, each decision is grounded in science and local knowledge.

This isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about lasting change. We’re focused on helping restore ecosystems so they can thrive again, bringing back biodiversity, natural resilience and carbon storage along the way.

Our new partnership reflects a shared commitment to responsible travel and long-term care for the environment. At Coast Hotels, we believe in protecting the places our guests love to visit and creating ways for them to be part of something meaningful that goes beyond the stay.

what we’ve helped restore so far

Here’s what Coast Hotels partnership with TELUS Environmental Solutions is doing on the ground and underwater:

  • 15,000 trees planted in Bearhole Lake, BC
  • 5,000 trees in Fox Creek, Alberta
  • 5,000 more in Lac La Ronge, Saskatchewan
  • 6,000 kelp plants in Hotham Sound, BC

Did you know 6,000 kelp plants can fill two large hotel rooms? The trees planted so far cover 16 hectares of forest and capture enough carbon to equal taking 1,785 cars off the road for a whole year. Even more inspiring is that 5,000 of those trees are growing in Fox Creek, which is a short drive from our Coast Hinton Hotel in Hinton, Alberta. These trees help restore land damaged by wildfires.

Your stay can make a real impact beyond great service. At Coast Hotels, we believe hospitality is about more than just where you sleep. It’s about the places you wake up to: the forests, coastline, and communities. Keeping them healthy matters. That’s why we’ve integrated eco-friendly practices into our everyday operations, including reducing plastic waste, using biodegradable cleaning supplies, and partnering with local experts who know these landscapes best. Our work with TELUS Environmental Solutions reflects this commitment. By making it easy for Coast Rewards Members to contribute, we’re turning everyday travel into a way to help rebuild what’s been lost.

With World Environment Day as a reminder, today’s the perfect day to give back to the planet that gives us everything.
