For freshwater fishing, the Quinsam River and Campbell River are both very popular and close to town with many types of fish including 4 of the 5 species of Pacific Salmon. Campbell River is 4 km long and the river is full of salmon including Chinook, Chum, Coho, and Pink. Types of Fish You Can Catch

Depending on the time of year, you can catch five main types of Pacific Salmon in Campbell River. These include Chinook, Chum, Coho, Pink and Sockeye. If you’re a sport fisherman, Chinook Salmon are tailor-made for you while Tyee (Chinook salmon greater than 30 pounds) can literally empty your reel when trying to bring them in. Tyee fishing is different here since no motors are allowed in the Tyee pool and anglers typically fish quietly in small, classic row boats. Chum Salmon, on the other hand, are powerful species averaging 8 to 20 pounds and are often called “dog salmon” due to sharp dog-like teeth of spawning males. Also known as Silvers and typically arriving in May, Coho Salmon have acrobatic tendencies and will test your patience. Pink Salmon are less daunting due to their small size, giving your children a chance to do some Campbell River fishing too. And finally, Sockeye (or red salmon) are prized for their bright red flesh and are the most valuable Pacific Salmon.

Winter Fishing

While Chinook Salmon are available year-round, November is the last month where you’ll find Chum Salmon. From January through April, you can find Winter Steelhead in the local river systems just a short drive from Campbell River, so, plan your adventure accordingly. Sport-fishing is also available through the entire year, so Chinook will be the centre of attention for you if you’re planning a fishing trip in the winter.

Learn More about Salmon

If you’ve had enough fishing for the day or you’d just like to learn about local fish, check this place out. The Quinsam Hatchery is an excellent place to learn more about all of the salmon species mentioned above. The hatchery is located off Highway 28 and has been operating since 1974. At the hatchery you can observe juvenile salmon throughout the year, or returning salmon from late July until late November. This hatchery plays an essential role in restoring natural spawning runs to the Campbell and Quinsam River.
