Visitors can stroll along the harbourfront walkway with shops, galleries and restaurants. Nearby is the Heritage walk in the Old City Quarter which reflects the ambiance and architecture of the mining era in the early 1900's. 

For those who prefer to explore the wilderness, extensive hiking trails are within easy access in the Nanaimo area and on the surrounding islands. Water is a central theme for Nanaimo and a variety of water excursions such as harbour tours, kayaking, wind surfing, sailing, and world class scuba diving are available. Guided fishing charters can be booked at the marina across from the Coast Bastion Inn.
