Coast Bastion Hotel
Spent one night while attending a conference. The hotel wad at capacity with large group. Had to another hotel for the second night of my stay, (rather inconvenient, yet doable) Underground paid parking was a plus. Walking distance to conference center. Harbour across the street. Had partial view of inner from my little balcony, a surprise as I didn’t book a room with a view. Room very clean, front staff helpful and pleasant! Bed very comfortable.
Updated and Comfy
Returned to the Coast Bastion for a one night stay. Pleasantly pleased to see all of the outstanding upgrades to this hotel. A landmark in nanaimo fir many years the owners have constantly kept it in great shape and continuously upgrade. The room was tastefully done. A very large modern flat screen TV that was easy to navigate through. Amenities were excellent. Plus it’s in a great location in the inner harbour
Bring a Flashlight
I spent a week there in early November while on a business trip.
Pros: Very clean – central location downtown. Reasonable rate.
Cons: Mattress too soft – huge TV screen directly above the desk; forget about TV if you need to do some work – check-in staff not the friendliest.
There was a power failure one day that began after 5:00 PM and lasted for over two hours. There were no emergency lights anywhere on my floor and the stairways were also totally dark. I was on the 12 th floor – what if there had been an emergency such as a fire or earthquake?
No one from the hotel went around to check up on us. Upon checkout the next morning, no mention was made by the front desk staff of the power failure; I was not asked if I had been OK, etc etc. I commented that I hoped no one was stuck in an elevator during the blackout – all I got was a rude stare from the clerk.
I hope that the fire department checks up on these establisments.

Great harbour view location
I was here for a performance with the Vancouver Island Symphony at the Port Theatre a short walk away. We were a large group of 70 people and the hotel was at capacity. The front desk staff were patient and kind.
The Coast Bastion offers a pleasant surprise in several ways but has a couple of quirky irritating issues too. For example, the beds are very comfortable, the view of the harbour is lovely and the bathroom is renovated, but the toilet doesn’t flush properly and the sound coming from the hallway can be loud. Also we were provided with butter knives instead of steak knives with our group prime rib buffet.
A fine hotel, good room, good restaurant, good service. I’d stay there again. Only problem was a bit of hike to the parking garage, but they took my bags at the front desk and took them up to my room for me, so no worries there. Lovely view.
