Coast Bastion Hotel
Decent, Central but showing a bit of age
There is really nothing to complain about regarding this place. Like other properties in this chain, it caters well to the business traveller with decent rooms and the usual sorts of facilities one might expect in a business hotel. The exterior and common areas are looking a bit tired, but this is well maintained hotel that is absolutely in the centre of town.
The room was very clean and eco friendly. The view from our balcony was beautiful! Room service was prompt, super tasty and affordable. My only complaint in the beds weren’t really too comfy. But they weren’t necessarily bad either. I’d go back!
It has been a while since travelling to Nanaimo and to be honest – the Coast is the one Hotel in the town that would think to stay with right off. I was under the impression that the hotel was outdated and wasn’t really looking forward to my stay (I had to be there for business so no choice in travel dates) but when I walked in and checked in – I was wonderfully surprised! The rooms are modern and fresh – from what I understand rennovations were complete a couple years ago. I had a nice room on the 8th floor – corner room which had a nice view from the small patio (not large enough for chairs but standing only); if you want a full view – you need to request “full” harbour but honestly the corner room works as well with the view. Lots of natural light in the rooms, large flat screen TV, sitting areas and nice closet space complete the room. The bathrooms are also fully rennovated with all the products you would need. I do like the bottle concept in the bathroom for the amenities – larger pump style bottles for environmental reasons I presume. Room was very clean and was ideal to finish up some work in the afternoon. Easy and fast wifi access along with helpful associates round out my experience. They did, however, run out of umbrellas on a very rainy night which was a problem; however, within 15 minutes a few other guests came back and I was able to take one. The bed was extremelly comfortable and room service was fast and efficient when asking for additional items such as glasses. You do hear the sea planes in the morning but it’s not to loud; at the same time that attests to the location (right across the street!) from the terminal; made the commute that much easier!

Stayed here for 10 nights in a large corner room on the 14th floor, so reasonable view of the harbour. You want a harbour front if you want the full view but as this was a late booking we were ok. Laid back hotel with helpful staff, even if reception is a little sleepy at times. But……..that’s Nanaimo anyway. Why rush?
Room clean, comfortable although heating was not that efficient but we were supplied with a heater to compensate. Also peaceful except for the occassional drone of the sea planes taking off. The only time we ate in the restaurant was for a late brunch and this was ok……eggs benedict tasty. Room service very quick and food hot…not always the case even in 5* hotels.
So overall we enjoyed our stay and it was a great location from which to explore the island.
Best option in Nanaimo
It has been a while since I stayed more than a night in Nanaimo, and I think then before the Bastion underwent renos. Well, they have done a great job. I had a standard room with two queen beds, desk and table, monstrous flat screen TV, and very clean and functional bathroom. Curiously I did find a few dried fish scales in the tub? The room comes with complementary coffee and tea, and a safe (always appreciated). It did not have a fridge which would have been nice, although there was space for one. The bed was very comfortable and the air con/heat relatively quiet (again much appreciated). Service was also excellent; the front desk was very helpful including allowing me to park for an hour in front when I first arrived. I only had breakfast at the restaurant but they have a good selection from a continental option to the regular eggs beni. But they also have healthy options including gluten free breakfast. If you are in Nanaimo for the night and want to stay downtown, I would recommend the Bastion, but maybe check for fish scales.
