We travelled to Campbell River to go Bear watching and used this hotel as a base for two nights.
The decor is dated but the hotel is not run down, in fact it has only recently been refurbished. According to the hotel its done in character with the surrounding area, which fits.
The staff were very helpful and our room was an excellent size with a large bed. We had breakfast included with our stay and this was very nice.
If you go bear watching with Campbell river whale watching then they are only a 5 min walk from the hotel.
Good Hotel in the Centre of Town
This was our first stay at a Coast Hotel and while not a 5 Star hotel as you would expect to find in a large city, it was a very good hotel and one of the best that we stayed at in any of the regional centres.
We had a King Room, plenty of space, a King bed, 2 chairs, coffee table and desk. And large windows with a view over to Quadra Is. Bathroom was a bit small, but adequate. Very clean and a combined bath/shower. There was also an in-room coffee machine.
The breakfast buffet offered a good variety, but there was no evening restaurant or bar service during our stay. This wasn’t an issue as there are good eating options nearby – the Harbour Grill was our favourite.
The staff on the front desk were very friendly, had good recommendations and were excellent to deal with.
We didn’t have a car so chose to stay in the centre of town, and would happily stay here again. There are other accommodation options outside of town which some may prefer for location.
By the way, the bus to the Nanaimo ferry terminal and to Victoria starts almost directly outside this hotel.
Excellent service, good location
Nothing too exciting, except a clean, well appointed, functional room. The “plus” came with the staff that went out of their way to help us with suggestions for sightseeing and making the arrangements for going. A nice complimentary hot breakfast was also an unexpected benefit. If you’re looking for an extravagant hotel, this is not the place. If you want a functional, great location, basic clean motel, along with some very nice people to help you out, I recommend this place.
Comfy bed and room with a view
We stayed at the Coast Discovery Inn for one night whilst we were in town for the Grizzly bear tour.
We generally stay in 3 star hotels however this hotel exceeded our expectations. From the moment that we walked in, the hotel felt warm and friendly. Our room faced the harbour, the bed was big and comfortable, and we loved the buffet cooked breakfast.
At the price we paid, this hotel is a bargain!
An Older Hotel with Upgrades
We stayed a couple of nights at the Coast Discovery earlier this month. They have three levels of accommodation – Comfort Rooms, Superior Rooms and Premium Rooms. Our room was at the middle (i.e., Superior) level and was in the “tower” (which has an elevator).
The hotel is located across the street from the water and the tower rooms have views of Quadra Island and the ferry. There is a lovely waterfront walk starting right in front of the hotel and easily accessible by pedestrian traffic light, as well as several restaurants about 5 – 10 minutes away. (The hotel restaurant was closed while we were there, likely a long-term closure. That part of Campbell River, including the Tyee Plaza next door for example, seems to be losing business to other parts of the town.)
The Coast Discovery is an older hotel and, although it has had some upgrades, it still had the “feel” of an older hotel. However, our beds were comfortable and the room, including the bathroom, was very clean. We did not have AC and, because it was rather warm, we had the fan on all night as well as the window open. While this did cool off the room sufficiently for sleeping, it also led to a certain amount of road noise in the evening and early morning. The breakfast buffet was very satisfactory for our simple needs (juice, fruit, cereal and a hot beverage). Although there were other offerings for guests preferring a more ample breakfast, we did not explore that part of the table and, so, cannot comment. The staff was lovely – desk staff, breakfast room staff and housekeeping staff – and very service-oriented. There seemed to be plenty of free parking.
On the whole, it was a satisfactory stay. The Coast Discovery is not quite as nice as certain other Coast hotels where we have stayed. However, it worked for us on this particular occasion.
